Start Building Self Esteem In 3 Easy Steps

OK, the beginning of this article is a bit blunt, but the the 3 steps outlined later are worth reading and thinking about. In fact, you can just skip the opening paragraph and go right for the meat of the article.

Low self-esteem can be a serious road block in your path to success. It will cause you to miss many opportunities. Here are some you probably know about or have experienced yourself: (a) becoming a sweating, stuttering mess during a job interview, and worse the interviewer asks you a simple question which you have completely forgotten the answer to. It is just downhill from there and your chances to get the job is gone; (b) starting to blabber while having a conversation, but it is even worse since it is a someone you are very attracted to, so there goes your chances to get to know them better.

To grow as a person building self esteem will be one of the best things you can do. Having self confidence and higher self esteem will make life more enjoyable and less frightening.

Here are the 3 steps:

1. Trust your own wisdom

2. Trust in your own Purpose

3: Change how you talk to yourself

Repeat Your Affirmations Daily

The following is from a post by John Assaraf from "The Secret" about affirmations. I am currently taking a course from John called Winning the Inner Game of Business Success. It's a really amazing program, and I can already see and feel the changes after just about one week.

Every time you read or listen to an affirmation, it becomes a stronger force in your life. Repeat your affirmations at least twice a day—morning and night. I find myself repeating my affirmations throughout the day, repeating them over and over. Soon you will have most of them memorized.

Are you affirmation positive or negative? We may not always be aware of it, but we all create and repeat affirmations constantly. The problem is, we typically don’t pay attention to exactly what those affirmations are saying. Often we go through the day giving ourselves all sorts of contradictory, or even negative messages. We may project confidence to the world around us, while our inner dialogue says… I hope this works. I am so nervous about this. I hope I don’t blow it. Affirmations are self fulfilling prophecies. If we say, This is never going to work… then chances are excellent it never will.

Get into the feelings, emotions and associations you have with affirmations. Feel so jazzed up about what you are saying that you feel like it is already there. When you are able to really get into that feeling place, this is when the new neural connections are created. It is essential to remember emotions, clarity and feelings are the key ingredients to creating effective affirmations that will produce results in your world.

The Power of Affirmations: How to Talk to Yourself

Here is a great article on the principles of building your daily affirmations. The author presents some important tips on how to create them correctly. If you already have some affirmations you are using, it's a good idea to review them after you read this, and make any adjustments that will improve them.

Six Principles of Positive Affirmation

Now that you have a basic idea of how to monitor your self-talk,  let’s look at six principles for building your daily affirmation exercises:

   1. Action Based

The best affirmations are those which suggests specific actions instead of just wishes like “I want to be more confident.” Instead, ask yourself what you would actually be doing if you were more confident, and use those verbs to build your affirmation. For example:

“I approach strangers with grace and enthusiasm.”

   2. Identity Based

Whenever possible, focus your affirmations more on changing your identity than on achieving goals. Yes, you want to achieve your goals as well, but always ask yourself what kind of a person you need to become in order to achieve your goal and build your affirmations around that.

   3. Affirmative

Instead of making your affirmations about what you want to stop doing, what you want to lose or what you don’t want, make them about what you do want. Whenever possible, use words like: can, will, want, gain and am instead of words like: can’t, won’t, don’t, lose, stop and quit.

This will encourage you to focus on the result that you want instead of the results you want to avoid.

   4. Specific

Your subconscious mind does not respond to vague requests and commands, so it’s important for you to be specific in your affirmations. This is another reason why action based affirmations are more effective. They give you something specific to focus on instead of stating their wishes like

“I am confident and assertive” or “I am wealthy and financially secure.”

TIP: Ask yourself exactly what you want to accomplish, determine what you have to do to accomplish it and build your affirmations around those specific answers.

   5. Practice

The most common reason why people fail in using positive affirmation is that they don’t practice them on a consistent daily basis.

Self Esteem Affirmations to Improve Your Life

I'm not sure if I shared this already, so at the risk of being repetitious, here we go.

One way of improving your life and how you feel about yourself is by using Self Esteem Affirmations. Many of us suffer from a poor self image or low self-worth, often stemming from our childhoods. We could discuss more about where these feelings come from, but I'd prefer to focus on what we can do about them.

Let's start by defining what an affirmation is. It's simply a declaration that something is true. The purpose of using them is to help us focus on a desired positive outcome, or change the way we think. Here are a few tips on how to create your affirmations:

  1. Keep them positive, avoid words like "don't", "can't" and "never".
  2. Make them short enough to remember without looking at them.
  3. Use words that you connect with on an emotional level.

Here are a few examples of my favorite affirmations:

  1. Every day in every way, I get better and better.
  2. I am totally adequate for all situations.
  3. I release all criticism.
